On June 19th Governor Rick Perry vetoed HB130, the legislation that would have provided many needy Texas families with access to full day prekindergarten programs while establishing class size limits (currently Texas has no restriction on public pre-k student:teacher ratios). While the legislation was not signed by Governor Perry, the 81st Legislative Session proved to be a victory for early childhood advocates, as 25 million dollars will still be used for other initiatives related to the state’s public prekindergarten system.

Thank you to The Texas Early Childhood Education Coalition (TECEC) and all early childhood advocates in the state for the hard work. Time to roll up our sleeves and get to work on behalf of Texas children and families for the 82nd Legislative Session!

Read Governor Perry’s veto here.

There have been many misconceptions about what HB 130 will do and won’t do for preschoolers, families and school districts. As the 81st Texas Legislative Session comes to a close and HB 130 still in the Senate, it is imperative for advocates and proponents of the bill to call their Senators and urge them to support the bill which would expand Public Pre-K from part-time to full-day, while establishing teacher:student ratios and promoting systems collaboration (Child Care, ISD’s and Head Start).
